Most interactions with police and the public, happen at emergencies or emotional situations. These are not the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street.
Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and leave people with a more positive impression of their local police.
It’s a simple concept, police and community members meet in an informal, neutral space like a local coffee shop, to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee.
Just like our Neighbourhood watch program, Coffee with a Cop was developed in the United States of America. In 175 cities and towns and 36 states, it has been reported that this initiative has improved community trust, police legitimacy and partnership building.
The key to the program’s success, is with removal of barriers that routinely define interactions between police and the community.
By allowing relaxed, informal one-on-one interactions in a friendly atmosphere, trust is built with police officers as individuals, which in turn is the foundation to building partnerships and engaging in community issues and problem solving.
The goal of these events, is to not only to speak about crime, but also the issues that are of concern to the community.
People are encouraged to join Neighbourhood Watch to receive emails and newsletters so they may be to be aware what crimes are happening in their area.
From these interactions with the community, our local police have a better idea how to make the Australia a better and safer place to live and enhance community relationships …
